Taking Advice from the Beloved Disciple – 1John 3

How often have people told you not to be concerned with your sin, or perhaps provided comfort by reminding you that a particular desire, behaviour, attitude or reaction is completely natural? Jesus came to deliver us from the penalty of sin. He also came to set us free from slavery to sin. So, what we believe about holiness matters. With God, love and righteousness are not separated (not within Himself, not towards us, and not concerning expectations of us). This chapter expounds on this for us and tests whether (1) our profession has God’s Spirit in us as our possession or (2) a course correction is needed.

From the epistle’s keywords, we see the emphasis in the chapter we are reviewing includes all keywords in a balanced way”. These metrics were counted using NASB95 (there are minor count variations in other English translations).

Entire Chapter: 1 John 3101197
All Chapters2640 4622

In the first 2 chapters, we saw 7 evidence of saving faith and now in Chapter 3, these concepts are further fleshed out. Please read 1 John 3. This chapter can be segmented into at least 5 segments with an overarching theme of ‘God’s love in His children results in holiness’.

The Holy Spirit (through the Apostle John) makes His birthmarks abundantly clear. As the Helper, He ensures the instruction is known despite many deceivers’ messages to the children of God about behaviour, morals, and liberty. His focus is on God’s imparted holiness (and its effects – Romans 6:22) that accompanies sonship. Did you know that holiness is best demonstrated by a life lived out in love and righteousness? (Hebrews 12:14, 1 Peter 1:15-16, 3 John 1:11) Let’s explore this.

  • Godly Character is:
  1. Holy in supernatural love
  2. Holy in perfect righteousness
  • Purpose of Text:
  • To confirm that children of God are to:
    1. Guard against deception; stay on the path!
    2. Know that God’s children share/abide in His holy character traits (love and righteousness) NOW (not just in the future when we are glorified).
    3. Know that despite our current shortcomings, we will be perfected to be like Christ when we see Him face to face because of God’s love.

Introduction and Conclusion

Segments 1 & 5

We are: (1) introduced to the reason the children of God are different than the world; and, (2) commanded to fulfill our family duties (abide in love and righteousness/truth).

  • #1: vs 1-3
  • God’s love surpasses the human understanding. His indwelling generates Divine love in our hearts changing us immediately. This is why we long for the day we are united in perfection to Christ. (This hope in Christ helps us remain untainted by this world as we readily wait for Christ’s return).
  • #5: vs 23-24
  • Children of God respect and obey their Father. His life-giving seed in us helps us love Him and all of His children.

Explanation of the Impact of God’s Love

Segments 2 – 4

The obvious distinction between those born of God and those of the world is demonstrated in how we live daily (priorities, practices, passions, and perspectives).

  • #2: vs 4 – 10
  • Contrast: (vs 9 & 10) The righteous children of God are contrasted to others (vs 7 & 8) practicing sin (who belong to the devil).

  • #3: vs 11-12
  • Comparison: (vs 11 & 12) Cain is given as an example and compared to unbelievers who practice sin (disobedience and without Godly love).

  • #4: vs 13-22
  • Contrast: (vs 13 – 17) Christ’s love is the believer’s example as a direct contrast to those who are not born of God (without eternal life).
  • Instruction: (vs 18) The children of God are commanded to demonstrate God’s love in their conversations and deeds(in all truth).
  • Contrast: (vs 19 – 22) The children of God know they have God’s righteousness through Christ because of the fruit of God’s love (vs 18) and conviction leading to repentance (vs 20) which is in contrast to the fruit of disobedience (vs 4 – 12).
  • Comparison: (19-22) The children of God have confidence and assurance because (1) His Spirit is producing fruit; (2) He hears and answers our prayers; and (3) God knows His birthmarks in the heart and will gather His own unto Himself.

Now, let’s briefly review the chapter and note some insights. What observations have you made? What is the LORD saying to you through His Word as you read this chapter?

  • Verses 1 -3: It is truly a holy and supernatural love that grants family adoption to fallen human beings who naturally rebel against God. The Sovereign of the universe is certainly not required to extend pardons. Yet, because of His:
    1. transcendent and perfect goodness in love, God has extended grace so that we can approach Him in faith and repentance as children; and
    2. righteousness, He ensures the penalty of sin is paid. Jesus paid the penalty on our behalf so that justice is served.
  • It is written:
    • This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1 John 4:9-10 NIV)
    • But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8 NIV)
    • But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions, it is by grace you have been saved. (Ephesians 2:4-5 NIV)
  • Because of God’s love, grace, and righteousness, despite our failures, anyone who fully relies on Jesus’ (the Son of God), finished work of redemption (as Scripture foretold) is indeed “NOW” a child of God from the moment their heart believed (was regenerated). It is this saving faith by God’s illumination in a human’s heart that causes God’s children to continue to confess our sins to Him and turn from evil ways to walk holy lives through His empowering Spirit. As it is written:
    • Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God; children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. (John 1:12-13 NIV)
    • But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” (Galatians 4:4-6 NIV)
  • Jesus forewarned that those who would not believe would hate the distinction His indwelling Spirit makes because the world rejected Him and thereby His Father. Children of God do not practice sin, nor do we share the world’s appetites. This non-conformity coupled with evangelism causes resentment toward God’s children in many. Jesus said to His believers:
    • If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before, it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. .. He who hates Me hates My Father also.” (John 15:18-19, 23)
  • Jesus said to the unbelieving who claimed to follow God but did not accept Christ:
    • … “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. “And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. … “I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father.” … “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. … “He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.” (portions of John 8:34-47)
  • Verse 4-10: In 1 John 3:7, the Greek word for deceive is planaó” (Strong’s G4105) which means to cause to wander, get off-course or deviate from the correct path. In the Apostles’s writings, John used this word frequently (1 John 1:8, 1 John 2:26, 1 John 3:7, Revelation 2:20, Revelation 12:9, and Revelation 20:10 to name a few).
  • The distinction observed in verses 4 – 10 is one of contrast between the regenerated and the unregenerated. Since God is love, His children are to love Him, His family, and His ways.

Children of God

The erroring elect of God who were justified by faith alone.

  • These individuals were people chosen by God to be His children and they followed His instructions.
  • Consider Abraham, Moses, and Peter who temporarily deviated or momentarily sinned followed by repentance to follow the instructions of the LORD; to return to the narrow of God.

Children of the World

Those who have never entered in through the narrow way.

  • These individuals either did not care because they were unbelieving, or deceived by believing they could earn a righteous position with God through their works (Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43; John 8:44.)
  • Consider Judas in John 6:70 or those who Peter and James warned of being false teachers in 2 Peter 2:1-2 and Jude 1:4.

The children born of God do not continue to practice sin because they understand who Christ is and what He did for them. They will not continue to wander off the narrow way; there must be a return because they are sons and have God’s seed within.

  • There is no sin in Christ. The devil is a liar (John 8:44) and so are those who kept under his deception repeating his lies to themselves and others ( 1 John 1:6, 1 John 1:10, 1 John 2:4, 22, 1 John 4:20, 1 John 5:10). He has informed humanity (starting in the garden) that they can do as they please, become their own god, and escape the penalty.
  • The child of God hears God’s words and harkens to them (John 8:47, 3 John 1:11). They overcome the spirit of antichrist/deception because of the Holy Spirit within (1 John 4:3-4).
  • Verse 11-12: Counterfeit Christians (professors without possession) appear to belong to the family (like Cain) but they do not love. When sin knocks at their hearts, they engage with evil (like Cain) which causes them to despise those who obey God.

Children of God

True children of God love each other despite shortcomings and differences because we are a family and we know what Christ’s love accomplished for us and in us. God-birthed faith keeps us from the wicked one.

  • Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. (1 John 5:1)

True children of God avoid harming God’s family. If made aware that their behaviours (words and deeds) are injurious in some way, they will seek to reconcile and rectify the situation.

They will take the Lord’s discipline and repent.

Children of the World

These deceivers/deceived remain spiritually dead and belong to the wicked one so they encourage and celebrate any defiance of holiness. It is unloving to encourage sin! Jesus said,

  • And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. “For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.” (John 3:19-20)

They can cause harm to children of God by misinforming unlearned believers to temporarily deviate from the teachings of Christ resulting in unnecessary grief, discipline and consequences.

  • Verse 13 – 22: The life and works of Christ were both in word and deed. He taught the priority of love (first for God and then for others) and He lived a holy life so that we could understand it practically. Then He loved the Father and humanity by giving up His life.

Jesus’ example showed us that God’s love consists of holiness, truth, and self-sacrifice for the sake of love and righteousness. This goes beyond feelings and kind words.

For the redeemed, this a commitment that starts at the new birth, lasts unto death, and is perfected in eternity. When the family of God expresses a need, we are to open our hearts and try to meet it in a way that is right and the best for others.

All of this is how we are to love God’s family.

  • The Holy Spirit brings us conviction when we are not behaving like God’s children. He does this individually to mature us. This conviction is not to condemn us but to train us in righteousness. The Lord knows His own and will not forsake His children; He works with us drawing us back into sweet obedient communion with Him.
  • God loves His Son and all children born of His Spirit so much that we can boldly ask Him anything. He answers all of our prayers whether it is yes, no, or wait. When we ask according to the Word and are doing the things that please Him, we can be confident we will receive what is right and best.
  • Verse 23-24: God’s command is to have total reliant trust in the name of His Son Jesus Christ for everything, and that we unselfishly seek the best for one another in love and truth. Habitually living with His word as the final authority and being led by the Spirit is the passing self-examination grade (or the proof) that He really abides in us.

Chapters 1 and 2 of 1 John provide 7 evidence of knowing Christ and having eternal life.

Chapter 3 provides the children of God with self-examination questions/tests to help determine whether a course correction is needed in the walk of faith on the path to the Father’s house that He has laid before His children.

Questions: Are you a child of God? Do you love other believers despite differing opinions, mistakes, personalities, hurt feelings, gifts and blessings, or ignorance? How do your attitude and actions demonstrate that you revere the Lord and abide by His teachings?

Instruction: John wrote that we would not sin and he reminded us that if or when we do, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ who intercedes on our behalf. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness when we confess it to Him. ( Refer to 1 John 1:9 to2:1 and Hebrews 7:25-27)

Holy and righteous Father loves His children and wants all to (1) abide with Him and Christ in fellowship now and (2) forever more so we need to avoid the deception that gives permission to sin. Sin may be natural to fallen humanity, but it is not part of God, nor is it a part of His overcoming children.

There is no sin in the Godhead but there is Help for our holiness in the time of need. Jesus said:

  • Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. … “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. “If you love Me, keep My commandments. “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever; “the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. (John 14:1-3, 12-17)
  • Why not take a moment to worship our Holy Saviour in prayer or in song? Acknowledge what He has already accomplished once and for all in redemption; and, what He will accomplish in you as you fellowship with Him.
  • Please read 1st John 4; remember to pray first.
  • Try to determine what themes exist in Chapter 4. John continued to discuss false teachers, love, and confidence/assurance. What is the difference between Chapter 3 and Chapter 4?
  • Look up the passages referenced in these study notes to verify them.
  • Pray, study and try to keep it short (my goal is now a 10-15 minute read).
  • Understand the evidence of eternal salvation with its instructions and warnings.  This is something we need to be sure of now.
  • Celebrate the assurance we have in Christ; deepen our fellowship with the Father and His family.
  • Identify and take any corrective actions.
